NASCAR™ racing has hit the track, once again, for the 2018 season. February 18 marked the official opener for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series™ at the legendary Daytona 500. Race car drivers come from all walks of life, from all parts of the country…including the DFW area. Local driver, Chris Buescher (driver of the 37 car) has found himself in the top 20 in cup standings after the race this past weekend in Las Vegas. With a top 5 finish at the Daytona 500 on the 18th, the year started off well and holds promise for the young driver. Although the race at Atlanta didn’t end as well as the team had wanted, the finish at Las Vegas shows good improvement. Prior to the race in Vegas, Buescher said. “I feel like our setups from track to track have gotten more similar. Maybe now that the cars are so aerodynamically sucked down on the racetrack and we don’t get much movement, you keep the setup more similar than you would in the past. I don’t think there’s a whole lot that translates. I’m going to have to go back to my notes from the test and go from there.” With a 15th place finish, it is apparent that he did. By the way, for those that are keeping track, Buescher is ranked 16th in the overall standings (according to NASCAR.com) . Thats ahead of some pretty big names such as Chase Elliot (ranked 21st), Kasey Khane (28th) and perhaps the most surprising is the 7 time Champion Jimmie Johnson (sitting at 29th). Definitely something for the locals to boast about.
After today’s race Buescher said “That was a lot of fun first of all. Best race we have had this year and looking at quite a few at the end of last year. From what I remember that was big. For us to be able to get a top 15 with our Natural Light Camaro ZL1 here at Vegas makes me excited to come back for the second one. I know conditions will be a lot different, but man it was a good time. We were able to go up there and pass some cars and get in a good spot. We just got a little bit off on that last stop there, but at the end of the day that was a lot of fun. I’m proud of everybody they worked hard this weekend. We didn’t unload very close, but we got a lot better by the end of practice and it showed in the race.
Buescher was at the track in Vegas earlier this year for testing. Buescher said “We did get to run the test there,” adding “That track is so fast and I feel like the pavement has aged pretty decent. You can widen out the groove quite a bit and move around and its getting some character through the bumps. It’s a fun racetrack.”
Although Buescher is considered one of the “Young Guns” of NASCAR™, he is no “rookie” to motorsports. Having started his professional race car driving career in 2005 (in the Legends series, where he won over 100 races). What many in the area may not know is that Buescher is a native of Prosper, Texas. With a great start to what looks like an exciting year to come, we will be updating race results weekly. Stay tuned and hold on for the ride!
