District 2-3A kicked off in Texas with some pretty big wins.
Jacksboro traveled to WF City View for a night that was about more than just two teams playing football. With September being Childhood Cancer Awareness month, schools across Texas were asked to “Go Gold For A Cure”. Former Jacksboro Coach, Jeff Miller, started this cause after his 15 year old son, Gunner, was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer that affects children.
Coach Miller, now at Rockdale ISD, is wanting to raise awareness for childhood cancer and also to raise money for research, and ultimately a cure. Childhood cancer receives only 4% of all federal funding available for cancer research. This has made the community of Rockdale become more aware of all childhood cancers and to get the kids involved with “kids helping kids”.
When Coach Hodnett recieved the e-mail asking if Jacksboro would participate, there was no hesitation. The only concern was that the night they wanted everyone to wear their shirts, we would not be playing at home. Coach Hodnett contacted City View’s coach and without hesitiaion from him, he agreed that his team and school would participate. Both schools went to work getting the word out and selling shirts, between the two schools, over 300 shirts were sold.
According to a post from facebook page > Gunner Miller vs Ewing Sarcoma there have been 7,000 shirts sold and over $40,000 raised for pediatric cancer research. If you didn’t get your shirt this year, don’t worry, Jacksboro will host a “Go Gold For A Cure” game next year in September.

For Coach Hodnett and the Tigers, the night ended victorious! With most area sports reports ranking the Tigers low, this young team lead by Sophomore Payton Laake, is proving them wrong.
