Under the lights, Pirate hopes shine bright

The first week of August has found things to be heating up. With temperatures busting the 100° mark, the best thing a human can do is try to keep out of the heat. That’s why the Perrin Pirate football team is hitting the field for their regular 2 a days at 5 p.m.  The Pirate team athletic director, Brad Hutton, made the call for evening workouts several years ago. With so many players suffering from heat exposure, most parents and players agree with his decision.

With helmets on, the players meet under the lights of the practice field where they practice and condition until around 10 p.m.  Although the temperatures are still in the high 90’s to low 100’s when they begin, once the sun goes down there is a bit of relief…even if it is just a little.

As I walked the field last night (around 9:15 p.m.) I noticed the teams were certainly not dragging. Perhaps more teams need to consider the practice that the Pirates hold. The temperatures were still warm, yes, but it was comfortable. But then I wasn’t running…
